n>You just inherited some family photos and you’re not sure what to do with them? Or perhaps you’re wanting to get started on some family history and you’re not sure where to start?
n>Begin by scanning any original photos and put them on CD for safe keeping or have someone do it for professionally for you. Remember when writing on the back of images to use a soft graphite pencil, fine-point marker or permanent pen that is waterproof and odourless, never use ball point pen.
n>Sorting your images in chronological order, family groups, individually or by subject will greatly help specifically when doing this sort of project. Using dividers, name & date tabs and photo cases that are lignin and acid free are essentialt. It is also a good idea to have a plastic container of some sort to keep those physical memorabilia in, like medals, broaches or watches you may be lucky enough to have in your possession.
n>By starting with a pedigree chart or family tree, this will give you’re a great starting point. You can download these off the internet or go to your local library. You would initially start with yourself, and work backwards, your parents, their parents along with brothers and sisters etc. You can also find family tree pages at your local scrapbooking store.
n>Some other things you can have on hand for information are letters, journals, newspapers and if you have the family around to do so, conduct an interview with them and ask memorable and important questions you might like to record for future generations.
